Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday asked a team of IAS officials to concentrate on the availability of ambulances for COVID-19 patients. He also suggested them to display the availability of hospital beds in ambulances.

Thackeray held a meeting of IAS officials appointed to coordinate with the patients in various government hospitals. He claimed that the complaints regarding non-availability of hospital beds have come down since they were appointed in hospitals.

Thackeray informed the officials that the government has acquired 80 per cent beds in 35 big hospitals in Mumbai.

“The government has created jumbo health facilities for the people. There is a need to instil a bit of confidence among them – that they could get better services in these facilities. That will encourage them to approach the government and subsequently reduce the burden on the private hospitals,” he said.

The chief minister also suggested IAS officials for creation of a system to coordinate among ambulances as there are enough ambulances available in the city.

“Assume that the battle against Covid-19 is in the last phase and we have to win it,” he said.

Thackeray also appealed NGOs to come forward and adopt each of the 227 wards in the city. He has asked the officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to help the NGOs in this work.

At a meeting with the representatives of the NGOs, he appealed them to take initiative for sanitising the public places in view of the monsoon.

Thackeray also has asked the eight municipal corporations in Thane to set up jumbo health facilities in line with the BMC. He insisted that aggressive testing and treatment is the key to keep reduce Covid-19 cases.

Thane district currently has the maximum number of active cases – 26,000 – in Maharashtra.
