Ex-TERI chief RK Pachauri passes away at 79

New Delhi: Ex-TERI chief RK Pachauri passed away on Thursday evening. He was 79. According to news agency PTI, Pachauri had been admitted to the Escorts Heart Institute in the national capital with a prolonged cardiac ailment some days ago. He had been shifted to life support on Tuesday. The PTI report further suggested that Pachauri had recently undergone open-heart surgery at the hospital.

It was further said that the environmentalist had suffered a heart stroke in Mexico in July last year, and was put on a ventilator after his condition had got critical. “He was suffering from cardiac issues.

He had open-heart surgery but was put on a ventilator,” the PTI sources said.

Controversy surrounding Pachauri

According to reports, in 2015, Pachauri was accused of allegedly sexually harassing a woman colleague after which he had to quit the post at TERI. In October 2018, a district court, in connection with the assault case, had framed molestation charges against Pachauri. He, however, had repeatedly denied the allegations that were levelled against him.

Reports also suggest that Pachauri had, during the hearings, sought a speedy trial saying he and his family were suffering from hardship since 2015, when an FIR was lodged in the matter. He had been given an anticipatory bail a month after the FIR was lodged in 2015.
