Roopmati was the daughter of a farmer from Mandu. She was also very beautiful as per the name and with it, she was also proficient in singing art. When Akbar came to know about Roopmati, he also started looking for ways to get her. He wrote a letter to Baz Bahadur asking that Roopmati be sent to his service. Baz Bahadur got angry at this and he flatly refused to do so.

Reading this, Akbar got angry and ordered his commander Azam Khan to immediately attack Malwa and imprison Roopmati. Akbar had a large army and Baz Bahadur’s army was small. He fought Akbar’s army strongly but lost the battle. After this, he took Baz Bahadur captive.

When Azam Khan came to her to take Rupmati, Rupmati ended her life by eating poison. Knowing this, Akbar was very sad and built a tomb for Roopmati. After this, he liberated Baz Bahadur. Baz said that he wants to go back to Sarangpur. On returning to Sarangpur, he gave up his life by banging his head on the queen’s tomb. In 1568 a mausoleum was built near Sarangpur. Akbar wrote ‘Ashik-e-Sadiq’ at the tomb of Baz Bahadur and ‘Shaheed-e-Wafa’ at the tomb of Rupmati.
