Facebook CEO blames BJP leader for Delhi violence, creates online storm
New Delhi:ย Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has drawn widespread flak online after he blamed BJP leaders for the Delhi riots which took place earlier this year.
Zuckerberg made the comments while addressing Facebook employees on the role of social media in inciting violence in the wake of criticism against the social media platform for failing to remove certain posts by US President Donald Trump which were deemed offensive.
‘You know, if somebody is actually going to encourage violence, I think in general, you just โ you just don’t want that content up. But our policies around incitement of violence, you know, have pretty โ have some clear precedents right around if people have to be calling for violence or targeting specific individuals.

There have been examples of government officials around the world, we’ve taken them down,’ the Facebook CEO was quoted as saying.
‘There was a legislator in Hong Kong who called for the police to come in and clear out and kill the protesters to restore order in society. You know, that was โ that’s obviously inciting and calling for violence. We took that down,’ he added.
‘And there have been cases in India, for example, where someone said, ‘hey, if the police don’t take care of this, our supporters will get in there and clear the streets.’ That is kind of encouraging supporters to go do that in a more direct way, and we took that down. So we have a precedent for that.’

The comments led to angry reactions on online with netizens criticising Zuckerberg for his views.
Although he did not name anyone directly, Zuckerberg seemed to be referring to BJP leader Kapil Mishra’s comments during a rally in north-east Delhi a day before Trump was scheduled to visit India.
In a video which was posted on February 23, Mishra could be heard asking the Delhi Police to remove anti-CAA protesters who were blocking the road near the Maujpur-Babarpur metro station.
‘We are leaving this area peacefully till the US President is in India. If the roads are not cleared by then, we will not listen to you any more after that,’ Mishra had told the Delhi Police during the rally.
The video was later taken down by Facebook since it violated its ‘Violence and Criminal Behaviour Policy’.
