Bored man starts drilling into his house wall, ends up discovering 50-year-old cavern
Quarantine and lockdown boredom is pushing individuals to do bizarre things at home. However, one bored man’s activity led to the discovery of a place that had been a secret for over 50 years.
Jake Brown of Devon, UK was doing some work in his new house when a noticed a peculiar patch on the walls that had a different texture. Curious to know what was on the other side, he started drilling a hole into the wall. In a few minutes, he was able to make an opening large enough for him to get inside.
Once he took a look inside, he was surprised to see a huge area under his house. The place he discovered was an old cavern with paint cans and newspapers that suggested the area was closed up for more than 50 years.

“Curiosity and a little boredom got the better of me, after which I grabbed a drill and began working pilot viewing holes into the wall. Once I had made two holes, one for viewing, one for a torch, I peered through into the dark dusty expanse and realised that it was another cavern of sorts.”Jake was quoted by LadBible.
Once Jake was able to open up the wall, he climbed down and explored the cavern. He found a lot of builders’ waste that appeared to be from a different era.
When he investigated the area further, he realised it was much older and bigger than he had anticipated.
Jake believes the area was used as an ‘easy space’ for hiding waste produced from property renovation and guttering. As he moved deeper, he began to search for evidence that would determine the true age of the cavern.
In the end, he ended up collecting bottles, paint cans, and remains of an old newspaper.
“I scanned through the jumbled pieces looking for dates or usable information to determine the era. There were little hints; the style of writing, no colour, picture style, currency, and then finally a date,” said Jake.
Once all the collectibles were identified, Jake contacted historian Richard Fisher and asked him for his guidance.
