Coronavirus in Agra – With 425 COVID-19 cases, Taj city tops chart in UP; ranks at 11th spot in India
Agra: Twenty one more coronavirus cases have been reported from Agra in Uttar Pradesh, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 425 in the city, District Magistrate Prabhu N Singh confirmed on Wednesday.
The famous Taj city, which boasts of having the iconic Taj Mahal, is topping the chart in Uttar Pradesh as far as the number of Novel Coronavirus cases are concerned. In India, Agra is at the eleventh spot.
With Agra recording the maximum number of cases in the state, the chances of easing down the lockdown norms post-May 3 seems unlikely. According to IANS, Agra Police have said 3125 cases had been registered and 469 people have been arrested for violating the lockdown, which has been imposed to contain the spread of coronavirus.
Notably, Agra Mayor Naveen Jain had written a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Dinesh Sharma on April 21, urging them to save the city from turning into India’s Wuhan.
In his letter, Jain had said, “I am writing this letter with a very sad mind that my Agra is going through a phase of excessive problems. The need is to take bold decision to save Agra, where the situation has become very serious. Hence, with folded hands, I am praying you to please save my Agra, please save it.”
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav have repeatedly hit out at the Yogi Adityanath government and urged the administration to wake up to the situation and save Agra.
According to the Union Health Ministry, Uttar Pradesh has recorded 2053 coronavirus cases so far. The state has reported 34 COVID-19 related deaths. According to the Centre 462 people have been cured/discharged/migrated.
