Man charged Rs 8.7 lakh for groceries worth Rs 6,800
Chicago: A man’s bank account was drained after he was accidentally charged $11,552 (Rs 8.79 lakh) for a grocery bill of $90 (Rs 6,800). He didn’t realise the error until he got back home to find his checking account balance zero.
Nick Blanusha went to Mariano’s grocery store in the South Loop last week to buy groceries. He received curbside service for his online order.
The bill showed $90.96, however, he said that when he gave his card to pay, he was charged over $11,500.
“(The store employee) said ‘Yeah, its $90.’ I signed the receipt got in my car and then went home to check my bank account to see if my stimulus check had hit and, uh, noticed that it was empty.
And I looked back at the receipt and noticed I had been charged $11,500,” Blanusha told ABC Chicago.
When he reached out to the store, the managers helped in correcting the problem. However, he was told that the reverse transaction would take four to five days through the bank.
“I have bills to pay, I have a phone bill to pay, parking lease, a car payment I have to make,” Blanusha said.
He contacted the I-team to see if there was any way to get it done early.
Mariano’s called him after the I-Team got involved and gave him $250.
“After learning about what happened with customer Nick Blanusha we contacted him to apologize for the error, and let him know the entire charge was refunded, including the charge for his order. Mariano’s will also take care of any fees or overdrafts that this may have caused,” Mariano’s said in a statement.
In a similar incident, an Australian man was mistakenly charged A$99,983.64 (Rs 48.56 lakh) for a single bottle of beer at a Manchester hotel in September last year.
