Who ruled Lanka before Ravana?
It is quite natural that most people associate Lanka with Ravana. But this exceptionally beautiful, rich and flourishing land had been ruled by other great kings before Ravana.
The birth of the kingdom of Lanka
Kuber, who was the chief of the demons and also believed to have a lot of wealth was asked was Lord Vishnu to create and remake Lanka. He was known as the ‘God of Riches’ and recognised by Lord Brahma as well.
Kuber was considered the ruler of evil spirits and Brahma and Shiva both had belief in him and equated him to gods. A mention to this effect can be found in texts pertaining to the Vedic culture.
Lanka was brought prosperity, fame, honour by Kuber. Lord Ganesh can also be related to Kuber.
The Golden Fortress
There are numerous theories that revolve around the coming up of the Golden Fortress of Lanka. The most prominent one would involve 3 demon brothers and the commissioning of a golden castle.
When Brahma, the creator gave a boon to three demon brothers Sumali, Mali, and Malyavan they asked Vishwakarma to construct a golden castle for them.
But further, Vishnu defeated the 3 demons and now it was abandoned. So Kuber asked his son Vishravas to move into the golden castle. This started creating more issues.
Ravan’s capture on Lanka
Ravan was the son of Kaikeshi and he wanted to move to Lanka and capture it. Kuber was more than happy to make Ravan a part of the kingdom but Ravana had different plans and wanted the entire place to himself and have a kingdom of his own with his demons.
So they had a fight and finally, Kuber had to move to mountain Kailasa. Kuber was aware that he was safest at Mount Kailasa as the mountain is the abode of Lord Shiva that devout Shiva-devotee Ravana would never dare attack.
