Help us get home – An appeal from 90 Indians stranded in the Philippines
Ninety Indians stranded in the Philippines due to a travel ban that came into effect in mid-March are asking the government to bring them back home on a charter flight.
Some are tourists and others work in the archipelago nation but have lost their jobs, said one of the stranded Indian nationals — a pilot — in a message sent to India Today TV.
India has extended its ambitious countrywide lockdown till May 3, and suspended all domestic and international air travel till then.
The Indians in the Philippines are “facing a huge difficulty” in finding food and shelter because restaurants are shut and hotels aren’t taking new guests, the pilot said.
“Some of us are elderly citizens with no access to vital medicines. All of us are in quarantine and none of us is sick.”
The stranded citizens have contacted the embassy but have so far been asked to stay put, and are willing to pay for a charter flight back home, the pilot said.
Social distancing and lockdowns are in place across a large portion of the world as it battles a new kind of coronavirus that has killed tens of thousands in a span of months.
For most people, the coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2, causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. But for others, especially older people and the infirm, it can cause severe symptoms and lead to death.
