
Youth Shot Dead in UP’s Prayagraj, Blamed Tablighi Jamaat of Spreading COVID-19
New Delhi: In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, a youth was shot dead outside his house after he allegedly blamed the Tablighi Jamaat, of spreading coronavirus in the country.
The incident took place in Kareli. Two people, including the main accused, have been detained in connection with the murder.
According to the police, the deceased, while speaking to a small group of people had, earlier, accused the Jamaat of spreading COVID-19 in the country. One of them, said to be the main accused, left the spot and later returned with some other people.
The victim was standing outside his house when suddenly an assailant opened fire at him, hitting him on his head and killing him on the spot. The accused tried to flee from the spot but were caught by the locals who later handed them over to the police.
Following the incident, forces in huge numbers were deployed in the area.
Taking cognisance of the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed that the accused be booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA). He has also announced a compensation of Rs five lakh for the victim’s family.
Notably, the Tablighi Jamaat congregation, held at a mosque in Delhi’s Nizamuddin last month, has been blamed for a huge spike in the country’s coronavirus cases in the last few days. Of the over 3,300 cases recorded thus far, nearly one-third are because of the Jamaat.
Uttar Pradesh has thus far recorded nearly 300 positive cases of COVID-19, including three casualties.
