PM’s call to fight Corona darkness with 9 minutes of darkness on Sunday

NEW DELHI, Apr 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday gave a call for switching off all lights in homes on Sunday at 9 pm and light candles, diyas (old lamps), torches or mobile flashlight for nine minutes to collectively challenge the darkness spread by the corona virus and show the power of light awakening the superpower of 130 crore Indians that they are all committed to jointly defeat the virus through a common resolve.

He said this will illuminate the common purpose all are fighting for. He, however, warned not to cross the ‘Lakshman rekha’ of social distancing as no gathering anywhere for the purpose, not going out on the road, lanes or localities but do it at the doorsteps or balconies of own home.

However, no word by Modi about thousands and thousands of people who are away from homes and locked up in relief camps, many without light, stopped on highways and at the state and district borders as if they do not matter in his scheme of things and rather tried to defeat the purpose of his lockout with a massive exodus on foot.

No explanation why nine minutes and not eight or ten minutes. He has enough following who will look for medical and scientific reasons even if he had given the call for nine and a half minute. The Modi govt tweeted on @mygovindia a video of “scientific reasoning” by former Indian Medical Association President Dr K K Agawal for lighting a candle at 9 pm but deleted it after a big backlash on the social media. Twitter was abuzz with jokes on the PM’s idea.

In the third address on corona pandemic, the Prime Minister said this would be yet another show of the nation’s collective as reflected in people’s curfew, ringing bells, clapping hands or clanging plates on March 22 and nine days of the nationwide lockdown to deepen the belief of the nation uniting as one in the battle against corona.
Modi said nine minutes of action he is advising will show that “we most certainly are confined to our own homes, but none of us is alone” as it would make all “experience the greatness, majesty and divinity of this collective strength.”

“In our country, the citizenry is considered a manifestation of God itself. When the nation is fighting such a huge battle, one should from time to time keep experiencing this collective superpower manifesting itself in the form of the people. This experience boosts our morale, gives us direction and clarity, a common aim as well as the energy to pursue the same.”

The Prime Minister wanted the new programme of registering the collective superpower of 130 crores to fight with confidence to win in this hour of crisis to continuously progress towards light and hope amid the darkness spread by the corona pandemic.
