After seven years of a torturous legal battle, Nirbhaya, the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern, who was brutalised and killed in 2012, finally got the much-awaited justice on the wee hours of Friday. All four convicts, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar, were hanged to death in Delhi’s Tihar Jail at 5:30 am despite last minute attempts to stall the execution.

With this case coming to a conclusion, there is a rising chorus for death penalty for the Kathua gangrape and murder accused. #JusticeForKathuarapevictim is trending on social media since Friday morning. People are now demanding a capital punishment for all the rapists in the 2018 case. 

The abduction, rape and murder of the 8-year-old girl in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kathua district had triggered a massive country-wide outrage in 2018.

Six of the seven accused in the Kathua rape and murder case have been convicted by a special court in Pathankot. Three of those have been sentenced to life imprisonment of 25 years. The other 3 accused were sentenced to five years in jail. The special court, however, acquitted one due to lack of evidence. The eighth accused, a juvenile, will be tried at a juvenile court. 

The victim, who belonged to the nomad Bakarwal community, went missing for a week before her body was discovered by the villagers a kilometer away from the village. She was allegedly gangraped in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua after being kept sedated for four days. 

According to the chargesheet, the abduction, rape and killing of the child were reportedly part of a carefully planned strategy to remove the minority nomadic community from the area.
