India could become the next global hotspot for virus cases

Experts say that normal containment measures may not work for India

India has so far reported more than 148 infections and three deaths

The ICMR announced it was ramping up the country’s testing capacity to 8000 each day

ICMR has denied transmission of the virus in the community.

But experts fear the community spread in the nation of 1.3 billion people.

Measures like widespread testing and social distancing may be infeasible in highly populated cities

“The number will be 10 times higher” by April 15, said Dr. T. Jacob John, the former head ICMR

“They are not understanding that this is an avalanche,” said John

“As every week passes, the avalanche is growing bigger and bigger.”

A key concern in India is Maharashtra, the state with the highest urbanization.

Mumbai has reported the biggest spread of the infection with over 39 cases

If we don’t stop the infection from spreading we could slip to stage three

That would mean a spike in the number of infections

In India 420 people live on each square kilometer, this puts India on High Alert

Social distancing is a challenge for the urban poor or the rural population

India’s health-care spending is among the lowest in the world, just 3.7% of GDP.

That’s left it with a patchwork of overcrowded public hospitals

Private health care is unaffordable for many people.

Experts doubt the government’s capacity to deal with the deadly spread
