Coronavirus pandemic – Planning to travel? Here’s how you can keep yourself safe

The coronavirus pandemic continues to spread chaos and shockwaves across the world amid rumours that Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro has tested positive for the virus. On Saturday night, Bolsonaro had dined with US President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. However, Bolsonaro took to Twitter to deny the media reports.

The development comes even as the number of confirmed cases worldwide has crossed 130,000, while the death toll due to COVID-19 has gone past 5000.

The pandemic has badly hit the travel and tourism industries, with Trump’s announcement of a travel ban from all EU countries making it even worse for businesses in these sectors.

Nevertheless, in case you’re travelling for business or pleasure, you need to take steps to protect yourself from COVID-19.

Keep these steps in mind if you’re flying

  • Given how air circulates inside a plane, viruses do not spread very easily. However, you should avoid coming in contact with sick passengers.
  • Maintain hand hygiene, especially if you are in the proximity of someone who has a cough or cold. This means cleaning your hands thoroughly with soap and water or, in the absence of that, an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a paper tissue or your elbow sleeve if you cough or sneeze. Make sure to dispose the tissue immediately.
  • Don’t touch your face.

Additional points to keep in mind on a cruise

  • Older adults are advised not to embark on cruise ships
  • In case you fall ill, you are advised to stay in your cabin; let the medical officer or medical bay on the cruise immediately know if you develop a fever or have symptoms such as a runny nose, cold, shortness of breath, etc.

Other important things to consider

  • If you are travelling, evaluate your risk factors and the quality of healthcare available at your destination, even if the place has not seen too many coronavirus cases so far.
  • Be mentally prepared for a sudden quarantine. This means you could be stuck in an alien place for an extended period of time. Plan for this eventuality.
  • Be ready for disruption in your schedule. Connecting flights may get cancelled because of a sudden spike in cases in some part of the world.
  • Check with the hotel you are checking into so that you know what happens if your booking has to be cancelled. It could mean, for instance, that you have to pay the entire price for the booking.
  • Be well informed about the country you are getting into, so that you know what to do in case of a medical emergency.
  • Be well prepared in terms of health and travel insurance that covers an emergency situation you could face abroad.
