As the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread fear in several countries, people are rushing to convenience stores to stock up on medicines, toilet rolls, and hand sanitisers.
The death toll from the novel coronavirus has reached 4,638 and the total number of confirmed cases stands at a staggering 1,26,259, according to Johns Hopkins university data. Authorities in many countries have ordered the closedown of educational institutes and offices in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
However, China has witnessed a steady decline in the number of cases as a result of tight quarantine practices and state of the art technology in screening stations and hospitals.
But the fear of the virus is resulting in many bizarre preventive cases all around the world. Many are going to extreme lengths to ensure they are not infected by the virus.
A few days ago, a woman in China burnt more than 3,000 yuan in her microwave oven after being worried her banknotes were contaminated by the coronavirus. The woman named Li said she was trying to ‘disinfect’ the notes but smelled something burning inside the microwave in less than a minute. By the time she hit the stop button, the notes were charred.
In a similar incident, a university professor burnt an entire set of examination papers while trying to sanitise them from coronavirus. The incident was narrated by the teacher’s pupil on Twitter.
Emily Perez wrote that another professor put the papers her teacher was grading in the microwave to ‘rid them of any chance of Coronavirus and then the papers caught fire’.
Emily’s tweet has now garnered over 65,000 retweets, 5.9 lakh likes and more than 3,000 comments. While some users suggested simpler preventive ways to check papers, many mocked the professor’s idea of sanitisation.
A user wrote, “Silly professor, Coronavirus can’t survive the three weeks between collecting the papers and them finally getting round to grading”
“How about he wear gloves, wash his hand and not touch his face?” wrote another.
“Hmmmm and this professor instructs higher learning classes??” wrote a third user.
