Smart metering for electricity: Now, power supply will be cut automatically if bill is not paid on time

The Govt is planning to intall new smart meters of electricity at your home following which power supply will be cut automatically if the bill is not deposited within a given time. Yes, you read it right, as per new rules, there will be no electricity supply if the bill is not paid and it will only restart after the payment of the bill.

Also, following the installation of smart meters, if the electricity load in the house is more than the prescribed limit, then also the power supply will stop immediately, and when the load is controlled back, then only the supply will start again.

Union Minister of State for Power RK Singh recently said that the govt has done all preparations for this. Speaking at an event, he also announced to install 10 lakh smart meters all over India under the govt’s Smart Meter National Program (SMNP).

These smart meters, already working in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Bihar, aim to bring efficiency in the electricity distribution system leading in better service delivery. The Programme is being implented through Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL). 

Postpaid and prepaid facilities to be available for consumers

With the installation of smart meters, both postpaid and prepaid facilities will be available, consumers can recharge the amount as per his or her needs starting Rs 50. Following the next recharge, the remaining recharge will be added further. The smart meter can also be switched off if not needed. Also, no one will come to take readings at your house now. The power company office will prepare the bill on the basis of the real time reading reflecting at their systems.
