Woman from China travels to Mumbai to track down man who duped her of Rs 1 crore

A businesswoman from China travelled to Mumbai last month to track down a man who allegedly duped her of Rs 1 crore.

Shagling Leo, the 43-year-old businesswoman, is a resident of Jinhua in China’s Zhejiang province. She travelled all the way from China to Mumbai to track down a trader, who allegedly did not pay his dues after buying goods from her, according to a Mumbai Mirror report.

Shagling went to the official address of the trader, Ilyaj Gagan, in Kalbadevi’s Abdul Rehman Street and found it locked. Gagan had earlier provided this address to her. She then went to Gagan’s house in Tromboy.

He was not there either. When she asked his neighbours, she found out Gagan was out of station.

Realising that she had been duped, Shagling went to a police station and filed a complaint. A case of cheating and criminal breach of trust has been registered against the trader. The police are now on the lookout for Gagan, the trader.

Police said they had to bring in an interpreter to communicate with Shagling, who could not understand English, and record her statement.

According to police, Shagling said she came in contact with Gagan through one of her acquaintances in 2015. Gagan had then claimed that he was selling belts in India. In the same year, he had visited Jinhua and bought goods worth Rs 1 crore from Shagling. He paid the whole amount in cash. After that, several dealings took place between Shagling and Gagan through her acquaintance. In 2017, however, Gagan asked Shagling to trade with him directly. Trusting him, she then traded directly with Gagan.

Shagling said Gagan made “regular payments” to her “till 2018 when he started defaulting”. She kept on asking Gagan to pay, however, he kept on making false promises. Later, Gagan became unreachable on phone. Shagling then decided to come to Mumbai to track him down on the address written in the business card that Gagan gave her earlier. She said he owed her Rs 1 crore.
