India vs Australia, Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 Highlights:

Highlights

India start the campaign on resounding note!

It’s all over at the Sydney Showground Stadium as Australi bow down in front of India spinners. In response to India’s 132, the hosts could only manage 115/10 in 19.5 overs. The architect of the win has been Poonam Yadav, as she dismantled the Aussie middle-order with her clinical bowling.

Easy pickings for Deepti!

A full toss from Deepti Sharma and Ashleigh Gardner fails to get the connected she would have desired for as she hits the ball straight into the hair.

The bowler calls for it and in the end, it’s some easy pickings for Deepti. AUS: 113/9 (19.2 overs)

Pressure mounts on hosts!

The pressure is mounting on the hosts and India capitalise. After hitting Deepti Sharma towards the deep mid-wicket region, Ashleigh Gardner shouts for a double, but an excellent throw from the deep by Jemimah Rodrigues spoils the party for the hosts. Delissa Kimmince falls short by miles as India command the proceedings in Sydney. AUS: 112/8 (19 overs)

Poonam misses out on a FIFER!

Poonam Yadav almost claimed her 5th wicket of the night but unfortunate for the Indian as the umpire rules it a no-ball. The ball had knocked the stumps but TV replay shows that it bounced twice before it reached Ashleigh Gardner. She completes her four-over spell with a clinical figure of 4/19. AUS: 106/7 (18 overs)

Taniya Bhatia executes some sharp glovework!

Shikha Pandey joins the party but it wouldn’t have been completed without some sharp glovework by Taniya Bhatia. Apart from the one odd drop catch, she is having a great outing. Meanwhile, the hosts have lost their 7th wicket and need another 31 to win from 18 balls. AUS: 102/7

Slightly expensive from India’s perspective!

Rajeshwari Gayakwad concedes nine in her previous over, slightly expensive from India’s perspective. Just when the pressure was mounting on the hosts, Ashleigh Gardner steps up and slams Gayakwad for SIX over the long-on region. India need to hold their nerves and maintain the pressure on the defending champions. AUS: 91/6 (15 overs)

Poonam Yadav is wreaking havoc!

Poonam Yadav is wreaking havoc in Sydney as she picks her fourth wicket in the span of three overs. The ball was travelling away from Jess Jonassen as she tries to play it across the line and gets a faint bottom edge. No mistake from Taniya Bhatia on this occasion as Australia lose their seventh wicket. AUS: 82/6 (14 overs)

Poonam Yadav is on fire!

Another one bites the dust and Poonam Yadav is on fire. This time it’s a googly and Rachael Haynes fails to read the incoming delivery, she walks out of her crease and fails to make any contact, leaving Taniya Bhatia with some easy pickings. Meanwhile, she strikes again in the next delivery as she cleans up Ellyse Perry on a golden duck. She, however, fails to claim her hattrick by a whisker as Jess Jonassen gets an outside edge but Bhatia fails to collect it. India are back in the contest, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur pats Yadav and indicates not to be disappointed with the missed chance. AUS: 76/5 (12 overs)

Alyssa Healy departs after completing half-century

A flighted delivery by Poonam Yadav and it came slowly than what Alyssa Healy had expected. She tosses the ball up towards the bowler and Yadav completes a simple catch in her followthrough. Healy departs after scoring 51 from 35 balls. AUS: 67/3 (10 overs)

Wicket

Australia captain Meg Lanning departs for 5, Gayakwad with the important wicket as she beat Lanning with spin and the edge is caught by Tanya Bhatia behind the stumpsAUS are 58/2 after 9 overs.

AUS cross 50

Australia women have crossed 50 runs with the loss of an opener. Arundhati Reddy comes into the attack and the pacer is taken for 15 runs by Healy, who is on fire. She slams three boundaries off the over to take her side to 52/1 after 8 overs.

Breakthrough

Shikha Pandey with the much-needed breakthrough for India. Beth Mooney gifts a catch to backward point, departs for 6 as AUS are 33/1 after 6 overs. India keeping things in check during powerplay.

Mandhana saves four

Smriti Mandhana dives brilliantly to save four, but crashes into the hoardings afterwards. After 5 overs, Australia 30 for no loss – Alyssa Healy is on fire with 23 off 19, Beth Mooney 6 off 11.

Australia in command!

Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney have got off to a great start as the pair adds 19 runs after the end of 3 overs. The game can slip from India’s hands if they fail to pick quick wickets. Meanwhile, the hosts will be happy with the way things have turned out for them.

Brilliant effort by Mandhana!

A brilliant effort by Smriti Mandhana as she throws herself into the boundary ropes to save the extra run. However, it seems that she has injured her shoulder in the process and the physios have taken her off the pitch. Meanwhile, Rajeshwari Gayakwad joins the attack from the other end. AUS: 5/0 (1 over)

Australian chase begins!

The pair of Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney arrive in the middle to start the Australian chase. Deepti Sharma will start the attack for India. Can India defend a paltry 132 and start their World T20 campaign on a winning note?

INDW set a target of 133

After scoring just four runs in the penultimate over, India continued to be on the backfoot with a barrage of singles and two. Delissa Kimmince maintained the pressure and conceded just seven runs in the last over of the innings. While Deepti Sharma scored 49*, Veda Krishnamurthy scored 9* to help India to a paltry 132/4. Can India’s bowlers turn things around? Stick around!

Climax coming up

Deepti Sharma (43*) has led India to a fighting total, and with two overs left, they are looking at something like 140. Sharma and Veda Krishnamurthy have to up their ante if they want to post a total that can challenge the Australia batting order. INDW are 121/4 after 18 overs.

OUT!

OUT! Jemimah Rodrigues is trapped LBW by Delissa Kimmince. India lose important wicket as Rodrigues departs for 26. INDW are 100/4 after 16 overs.

India require increase in scoring rate

Deepti Sharma and Jemimah Rodrigues working on the rebuild here. Their partnership has nearly hit 50 and India are 95/3 with five overs to go but the two need to make sure India see an increase in the scoring rate.

Jemimah-Deepti partnership

Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma are scrapping hard at the Sydney Showground. 6 singles off the Garnder over as their partnership moves to 35 off 38 balls. INDW are 82/3 after 13 overs.

Wide

Delissa Kimmince gets the radar wrong and it goes for a wide. The ball went down deep the leg-side. INDW are 76/3 after 12 overs.

Deepti goes for boundary

The boundaries are back into the mix! Deepti Sharma with a healthy respite for India as she sweeps Ashleigh Gardner beating the deep square leg fielder. India still going quite slow though. INDW are 70/3 after 11 overs.

Deepti, Jemimah hold firm

Delissa Kimmince comes into the attack for Australia to keep the momentum going, but by the looks of it, Deepti Sharma (7*) and Jemimah Rodrigues (11*) have put up some resilience and shown some tenacity to withstand the hosts’ bowling attack. After six singles in the last over, both of them have formed a nice understanding now. Six runs off the over. INDW are 63/3 after 10 overs.

Fifty up for INDW

The boundaries have dried up, but hey atleast the fifty’s up… for the team. Deepti Sharma takes four Ellyse Perry balls to get the first run of the over, and gets the fifty up for the team. Just 11 runs from the last four overs though. INDW are 51/3 after 8 overs.

STUMPED!

Absolutely bizarre! Harmanpreet Kaur is dismissed by Jess Jonassen with a little help from Alyssa Healy. As the Indian captain came raging forward to hit the ball out of the park, she missed it and the ball came off Healy’s knees onto the wicket to knock the bails over. Stumped and the Australians are loving it here. Things go bad to worse here. INDW are 47/3 after 6.4 overs.

AUSW on the frontfoot

Powerplay ends

The captain, Harmanpreet Kaur is on, and it’s upto her and the 19-year-old Jemimah Rodrigues to turn things around as Australia are on the frontfoot now. Can India deal with the pressure calmly? Just four runs off the over. INDW are 46/2 after 6 overs.

SAVED, AND DISMISSED!

Ellyse Perry starts the over well, and she gets Jemimah Rodrigues dismissed with a LBW. But things go upstairs, and it’s clear that the ball is missing the wickets. But while the 19-year-old got a lifeline, her compatriot Shafali Verma threw her wicket on the third ball as she pulled it straight to the hands of Annabel Sutherland. She departs for 29. INDW are 43/2 after 5.3 overs.

WICKET!

After all the jubilation offered by Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana falls to a brilliant delivery! Jess Jonassen comes in and on her first delivery itself, she traps the premier batswoman between the wickets. She departs for 10. INDW are 41/1 after 4.1 overs.

FOUR! FOUR! FOUR! FOUR!

It’s Shafali Verma again, and she is just showing what she’s got in her locker, and against Megan Schutt of all people. One pummelled over mid-off, a fascinating cover drive, and another cheeky boundary to fine leg. INDW are 40/0 after 4 overs.

Shafali joins in on the act

Over cover and Shafali Verma hits her first boundary in a World Cup! Molly Strano pitched it around off, and she just lifted it cleverly. And my oh my, two singles later, we have the first six of this edition. It’s Shafali again! INDW are 24/0 after 3 overs.

Mandhana in song

And that’s the way to do it for Smriti Mandhana, as she soaks in the pressure from Ellyse Perry and hits a massive boundary, over everybody’s heads. She follows it up with yet another — one over mid-on, another to long-off. INDW are 11/0 after 2 overs.

DROPPED!

Smriti Mandhana just let out a huge sigh of relief and Ellyse Perry can’t believe it! In the air and dropped by Molly Strano at mid-wicket. INDW are 2/0 after 1.2 overs.

Strano begins strongly

Molly Strano began the innings for Australia quite well, spinning a web against the Indian openers right from the beginning. Just two off the over, with a single each by Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. INDW are 2/0 after the first over.

Game on!

The opening ceremony and the songs and the performances are over, so it’s now time for the actual thing — cricket. And it’s Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana who are opening for India. Molly Strano will begin the proceedings for Australia with the ball.

Treat for slow bowlers but something for quicks too

Stat attack!

Who has the most runs in the tournament? Okay, that’s New Zealand’s Suzie Bates with 881 runs. But what about the highest individual score? Or the most wickets? Or what’s the highest innings score? Here are all the numbers ahead of the T20 World Cup.

What Harmanpreet had to say

“We wanted to field first but toss is not in our hands. We want to play good cricket here. Today we are going with three spinners and two fast bowlers. We are getting lot of support back home. We want to play our natural game so that we can win and get more support.”

Here’s Haryana Hurricane

“Shafali Verma’s straight six off Australian pacer Megan Schutt in a tri-series T20 game has been playing on loop on social media for a while now. Her father Sanjeev says that the hours spent playing the game on Rohtak’s narrow streets has helped his daughter send the ball over the sightscreen.” Sandeep Dwivedi takes a deep dive.
