Much to everyone’s shock, Eminem took the stage at the 2020 Oscars Sunday night.

For the act, the rapper chose to perform “Lose Yourself,” which won the Oscar for Best Original Song back in 2003 after appearing in his 2002 film, 8 Mile. The unexpected performance comes less than a month after Eminem dropped a surprise album entitled Music to Be Murdered By.

Given that no one seemed to know about Eminem’s cameo, many couldn’t hide their shock seeing the rapper back on stage, most notably Idina Menzel and Billie Eilish.

Then again, some celebrities, like Kelly Marie Tran, seemed to be absolutely living for the throwback performance.

The crowd’s varying facial expressions aside, everyone gave Eminem an enthusiastic standing ovation after he was done, which tells us the majority of the audience was loving it (including Idina and Billie, who started to dance after the initial shock wore off).

After taking the stage, Eminem hopped on Twitter to show his gratitude for getting the opportunity to perform at the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony. It meant a lot to him, especially considering when he won the Oscar for “Lose Yourself” back in 2003, he didn’t come to the ceremony to accept it. In an interview, Eminem revealed that he was at home “sleeping” during the Oscars because he didn’t feel like he had a chance of winning.

“Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity… Thanks for having me @TheAcademy. Sorry it took me 18 years to get here,” the rapper tweeted alongside footage from the moment the song won at the 2003 Oscars.
