Video emerges of Chinese officials forcefully removing suspected coronavirus patients from their homes

As the coronavirus death toll crossed 800, the Chinese authorities now seem more than desperate to contain the spread of the deadly disease. In fact, following the death of as many as 86 patients on Friday, videos have emerged of how officials are identifying coronavirus patients, and forcefully removing them from their homes.

For instance, this video shows medical officials in masks and protective suits, entering the home of suspected patients, and taking them to quarantine facilities by force. Many more such videos have emerged on social media platforms.

According to reports, the Chinese authorities started taking such steps, when the coronovirus death toll crossed the SARS death toll.

In 2003, the SARS outbreak had infected over 8000 patients, while the death toll was 774. On the other hand, the coronavirus has already killed 813 patients, out of which 811 are from China, while the other two deaths occurred in Hong Kong and Philippines. More than 34,000 people have been infected.

The Chinese government have asked authorities in Wuhan to round up four types of people – confirmed patients, suspected patients, people who have been in close contact with the former two, and people with fever. Refusal to cooperate has resulted in forceful removals like the video shows. The order is said to have come from Vice Premier Sun Chunlan.

Wuhan city has as many as 14 million residents, however it is not clear how many of them can be kept at quarantine facilities. Wuhan has been identified as the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, while the Chinese authorities have also sealed some other cities to contain the disease.
