Congress spokesperson Brijesh Kalappa on Monday wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla regarding the latest statement made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anantkumar Hegde on Mahatma Gandhi’s freedom movement.
Ananthkumar Hegde, a former Union minister, reportedly claimed at an event in Bengaluru that the entire freedom movement was staged with the consent and support of the British, and the independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi was a “drama”.
Brijesh Kalappa wrote to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla and requested him to get Ananthkumar Hegde examined to check the BJP leader’s sanity.
In his letter, Brijesh Kalappa also requested the Speaker to refer him for treatment to any “psychiatrist”.
Brijesh Kalappa also listed down the other times Anantkumar Hegde made controversial statements.
“It is apparent to any reasonable person that Mr Anantkumar Hegde has taken leave of his senses and obviously requires serious medical attention. Under Article 102 of the Constitution, an insane member cannot continue as a member of the Lok Sabha,” the letter states.
“I request your honourable self to conduct a medical inquiry into the sanity of Shri Ananthkumar Hedge and if found medically fit impose requisite punishment within framework of the constitution for feigning madness, or forthwith refer him for treatment to any qualified psychiatrist, pending which his Karwar seat may be declared vacant warranting election,” Brijesh Kalappa wrote in the letter.
After Ananthkumar Hegde termed the freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi as a “drama”, the Congress accused the BJP of practising the politics of violence and polarisation and said a sedition case should be slapped against the former Union minister and Prime Minister Narendra Modi must apologise for it.
The opposition party demanded that the prime minister must come to Parliament and clarify his position on Hegde’s “objectionable” remarks, and asserted that it was time for Modi to prove whether his loyalty was towards Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse or the Father of the Nation.
“We demand that the PM come to the House and makes his position clear. These feed that he is unhappy, he is angry, we are not concerned with that, why this is happening. Mr prime minister, why such a thing is allowed,” Congress senior spokesperson Anand Sharma asked.
“They are disparaging the national movement. If the prime minister and the BJP government are sincere about the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, we demand that the PM come to Parliament and clarify his position,” he said.
“They are desperate for the elections. Only to get some votes in the Delhi elections, they have inflicted deep wounds on the very soul of India,” he said.
Meanwhile, the BJP has served a show-cause notice to Anantkumar Hegde for his comments against Mahatma Gandhi.
