Mumbai: Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister and Congress MLA Yashomati Thakur, on Sunday, said that touching a cow ‘drives away negativity. Her comment has come days after she faced criticism over her statement about the newly-sworn ministers in the Maharashtra ministers not making money yet.
After her ‘cow’ comment went viral, Thakur who is an MLA from Teosa took to defending the statement by saying that touching any animal fills one with compassion and that it is the same with cows that are also considered holy in Hinduism. She while addressing a public gathering in Amravati, said, “Our culture says if you touch a cow, all negativity will go away.
While speaking to news agency PTI on Sunday, she said, “Cow is a sacred animal. Moreover, be it a cow or any other animal, touching them brings a feeling of love to us. What is wrong in what I said?”
She had earlier made news when while campaigning for the Vashim Zilla Parishad polls, she had stirred controversy by commenting on the money matters of the newly sworn Maharashtra ministers. She had said, “we have just come to power, our pockets are not warm enough yet”. She had also gone on to say that the voters may accept money from the opposition but should still vote for the Congress.
Maharashtra is currently ruled by an alliance government that consists of the Shiv Sena, NCP and the Congress. The three parties had come together to form the government after the Bhartiya Janata Party had dropped out of an alliance that it had gotten into with Shiv Sena before the state went into polls. The two parties had fought the elections together but had fallen out just after the results came out. The alliance is currently led by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray who has now become the Chief Minister of the state.
