Arrested cop Davindra Singh will be treated as terrorist: IGP J&K Police

The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police on Sunday confirmed the arrest of a deputy superintendent of J&K Police along with two Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in south Kashmir. Addressing a press conference on the arrest of the senior cop, IGP J&K Police Vijay Kumar said the arrested cop would be treated and investigated as a terrorist.

The J&K Police on Saturday detained a senior police officer, Davindra Singh, along with two militants — Naveed Babu and Altaf — when the trio was travelling in a vehicle on Srinagar-Jammu highway on Saturday.

Five grenades and three AK-47 rifles were also recovered from the top cop’s residence, top sources said.

Confirming the arrest of the decorated J&K cop, IGP Vijay Kumar said, “Yesterday during an operation in Sophian, one Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was arrested along with two wanted Hizbul Mujahideen militants, while they were travelling together in a vehicle on National Highway.”

IGP Vijay Kumar said the arrested officer will be interrogated by all security agencies and will be treated like the other arrested militants. “Interrogation is underway,” he said.

“We have taken serious note of the police officer who was arrested with two top terrorists in Anantnag. We are interrogating him,” Vijay Kumar said.

DSP Davindra Singh was awarded the President’s Medal for his role in anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

The police officer was alleged to have been ferrying the militants from the Shopian area, possibly out of the Valley when he was detained by the J&K Police. Deputy Inspector General of South Kashmir Atul Goyal was supervising the operation.
