Mumbai: In Maharashtra, the BJP lost on Thursday at the hands of the Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP alliance, the posts of president and vice president of Nashik and Kolhapur district councils. However, the BJP managed to save the post of president and vice-president in Sangli Zilla Parishad where Shiv Sena members decided to support it.
District councils are important local bodies and are sometimes called ‘mini ministry’ (mini secretariat). This is said to be due to their powers.
The political equations in the three district councils have changed after the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance ended. In Kolhapur and Nashik, Shiv Sena joined hands with Congress and NCP during elections for the post of president and vice-president. In Nashik, Balasaheb Kshirsagar of Shiv Sena has become the president and Sayaji Gaikwad of NCP has become the vice president, while Bajrang Patil of Congress has become president in Kolhapur district council while Satish Patil of NCP has become vice-president. In Sangli, BJP’s Prajakta Kore and Shivaji Dongre became president and vice-president, as three Shiv Sena members voted for the BJP.
