Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has revealed what he went through before his 1st international press conference after scoring his maiden Test hundred in Manchester in 1990. Sachin had scored an unbeaten 119 during the 2nd Test of the tour in a match that ended in a draw.

In a freewheeling chat with India Today Consulting Editor Sports Boria Majumdar, Sachin said that his teammates had tried hard to put him under a lot of pressure after it was decided that he would face the reporters having top-scored in India’s 2nd innings.

“Yeah (I remember that). It was in Old Trafford.

And everyone had scared me in the dressing room. Because I had not faced foreign media and post-match interviews. So everyone scared me in the dressing room, “Teri aaj waat lagne wali hai (you’ll be in deep trouble today), they are gonna ask you all sorts of questions”. And that time Mr. Madhav Mantri was our manager, so he said “don’t worry”. He put his arm around me and said, “I am going to be around, you just have to talk about the match and talk,” Sachin told Majumdar.

Sachin also recalled that his teammates didn’t move from their respective spots in the balcony as the youngster compiled a stroke-filled century at Old Trafford.

“I still remember Ravi (Shastri) was there in the balcony. Anil (Kumble) was there, Kiran (More) was there, and all those guys, they did not move there spot,” said Sachin.

On People putting all their hopes on him

“I did not know all these things and people try and tell me all these things. I was not prepared to accept that because Cricket is all about the playing XI, what the team does in the field, It is not an individual sport. You always find individuals contributing a little more than the rest of the guys but that is not possible without the support of the rest of the guys.

“And when it comes to pressure, I like it because the pressure is there because I have done something in the past. And people started believing in me. So it is up to you whether you take it as a positive thing to happen in your career or another obstacle to overcome. I took that as a complete. Imagine nobody expecting from you and I go out to bat, maybe I am in the wrong profession,” said Sachin.
