Virat Kohli Captain of India is bowled by Sheldon Cottrell of West Indies during the 1st One Day International match (ODI) between India and the West Indies held at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on the 15th December 2019.
India was put into bat by Kieron Pollard after the Windies skipper won the toss and Virat Kohli said he was ‘very surprised’ by the decision because he would’ve elected to bat as well, had Pollard got it wrong.
Out walked Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul to open the innings with regular opener Shikhar Dhawan’s injury keeping him out of this series as well.
A slow start by the two, as India got to 19/0 in 6 overs.
Simon Cottrell though turned the game hugely in the visitors’ favor as he packed off not just Rahul but skipper Virat Kohli too, in the 7th over.
Rahul was caught on 6 by Hetmyer and Virat lasted just 4 balls as he fell immediately after opening his account with a boundary – castled on 4.
Shreyas Iyer joined the vice-captain and the duo got India past the 50-run mark. But Rohit departed on 36 after handing an easy catch to Pollard. He tried to pull a short ball from Alzarri Joseph, but it ended up going straight to mid-wicket in the West Indies captain’s hand.
Rishabh Pant joined Shreyas Iyer in the middle and the duo’s partnership crossed 100. This was the third successive 100+ partnership for 4th wicket for India.
Just when things were looking good for India, Joseph sent Shreyas Iyer back to the pavilion in the 37th over of the innings. Shreyas, playing on 70, handed an easy catch to Pollard who didn’t have to move an inch.
Earlier, West Indies have won the toss and elected to field first against India in the ODI series opener at Chennai.
“We will field first. This pitch is bit of an unknown so we will see how it behaves. We are looking forward to this challenge. We have done a lot of talking how we want to play international cricket. We want to be competitive,” Pollard said at the toss.
Virat Kohli says he’s ‘very surprised’ by Kieron Pollard’s decision adding that he would have elected to bat first anyway.
“Very happy to bat first. It looks like a dry track and we would have wanted to bat anyway. A decent total on the board would put us in a strong position. In 50 overs, strike rotation is important and that’s where our bowling attack becomes lethal. West Indies are a dangerous side and we can’t take them lightly,” he added.About the squad he said, “The guys who are not playing are Manish Pandey, Mayank Agarwal, Yuzvendra Chahal and Shardul Thakur”.
